New 2012 Vauxhall Astra VXR

Astra VXR.

The new Vauxhall’s Astra VXR will be available to customers from April 2012, Vauxhall know the VXR will have to compete with the like of the Volkswagen Golf GTi and Ford Focus ST for sale figures. The Vauxhall VXR should tick all the required boxes to be a true Hot Hatch, including handling and raw power which the new VXR has it in abundance. 

VXR Engine.

In fact Vauxhall have said the Astra VXR will out power any current hot hatch, including the Renaultsport Megane 250, Volkswagen Golf R and the Seat Leon Cupra R. The official power figures are still under wraps, but 276bhp has been mentioned with 400Nm of torque which is expected to rocket the Astra from 0-62mph in under six seconds, while the top speed has been restricted to a quoted 155mph.

VXR Styling.

The VXR is based on the current Astra GTC which is already a big hit, but the new VXR will receive some sportier touches which will further enhance it. Vauxhall have added a sporty honeycomb front grille, front splitter and triangular ducts to guide cold air onto the Brembo brake discs. To complete the sporty hot hatch design side skirts, sporty 20-inch alloys and twin exhausts have been fitted.

VXR Technology. 

Technology including Vauxhall’s HiPerStrut system, mechanical limited-slip differential, wider track and drivetrain make sure all the power from the VXR engine is delivered directly to the road. The HiPerStrut system is Vauxhall’s answer to Ford’s RevoKnuckle and Renault’s PerfoHub which improves grip, reduces torque steer and Vauxhall claim it will give the VXR exceptional lateral grip. At a push of a button you can firm up the suspension, improve throttle response and sharpen up the steering thanks to Vauxhall’s FlexRide adaptive dampers. To improve this system Vauxhall have fitted a special VXR button on the dashboard that will improve the whole set up even further.

VXR Development.

To help develop the new VXR Vauxhall sister company Opel have employed Jo Winkelhock who is a past Le Mans winner and British Touring Car Champion. Winkelhock will work alongside OPC at Germany’s Nurburgring which is the equivalent to VXR to fine tune the new hot hatch.   

VXR Interior. 

Bucket seats finished off in a high quality leather with embossed logos have been fitted to the new VXR and to match this a flat bottomed steering wheel, gear lever cover, arm rest and door trim have touches of the same leather. To complete the sporty look Vauxhall have fitted sporty dials to the dashboard of the VXR.
