Nissan’s plant at Sunderland has set a new UK production record for most vehicles built in a 1 year period. The Sunderland plant is well known for its good levels of production and once again they have proved this by setting a new UK record. The staff at Nissan’s Sunderland plant built a staggering 423,000 vehicles in 2010 which makes it the first UK car manufacturer to build more than 400,000 vehicles in one year. The Sunderland plant builds popular models like the Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Juke crossover, and soon production will start on Nissan’s new electric vehicle the Nissan Leaf. Professor Rhys Garel who is an automotive expert said the Sunderland plant is an example to all other car manufacturers during these hard times of recession as they still managed to achieve such good performance figures, he put this down to efficient work practices and excellent industrial relations.
Since Nissan first opened in 1986 it has created more than 12,000 jobs for the local area and since 2006 more than 1 million Nissan Qashqais have been built which makes it one of the most successful British built cars ever. Current figures show that the Nissan Qashqai has sold more than 20,000 vehicles in the UK so far this year.
