Mazda is currently progressing with the new MX-5 aiming to recreate the spirit of the original eighties motor, bring back its simple driving experience and a much lighter vehicle.
SKYACTIV have been key to the creation of the next-gen Mazda MX-5s, these are technologies that focus on lowering weight and upgrading efficiency. Engineers have claimed they are on track for a kerbweight of under 900kg, 150kg lighter than the current car.
The body and chassis will together account for a 10 percent weight loss each. Steering and suspension has been revived to offer lightness and agility at slow pace but a more assured feeling at high speeds. The new design combines a large shield grille and distinctive creases in the bodywork.
With the new lighter Mazda MX-5 will come a range of smaller engines. New models are expected to be power-driven by a turbocharged 1.3-litre SKYACTIV engine, with current models using a 2.0-litre and 1.8-litre engines producing up to 170bhp.
The Mazda MX-5 next-generation is expected to be unveiled towards the end of next year, going on sale at the start of 2014. Click Here to View All our Mazda MX-5 deals.
