New Ford Focus Coupe (Capri)

Ford is taking on the VW Scirocco with a modern version of the Legendary Ford Capri. Since the Ford Cougar left the line back in 2002, Ford have watched as the Volkswagen Scirocco has swept everything else to one side and taken the market by storm. The New Coupe will be based on the new Focus and will cover two roles, one of them by replacing the outgoing three door Focus hatch while also being the flagship for the entire range. The Focus Coupe will make its debut at January’s Detroit Motor Show in a concept form. As with the latest Focus and Fiesta it’s a world car, this is a result of the One Ford global design strategy. Ford design boss Martin Smith said “Our plan was always to get the basic Ford product line-up successful,” “Now we have done that, we can start to build more exciting products – and we’ll show how we’re going to do this at Detroit.” The Ford design team for the Focus Coupe looked towards the Ford Capri for inspiration but as you can see from the latest Focus Coupe image this is not retro design of the Capri, the front is very similar to the Focus ST while I can’t help thinking the rear is like the Volkswagen Scirocco. The front has a gaping grille, and there’s a steeply sloping screen at the rear. One link to the Capri is the distinctive C-pillars, while features such as LED headlights, large alloys and a centre-exit exhaust complete the look. The new Ford Focus coupe will use the ST’s front wheel drive chassis and Ford’s traction enhancing torque vectoring system. Performance will come from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine, which produces 247bhp which enables it to reach 0-60mph in around six seconds and a top speed of 155mph. The Ford Focus coupe will make an amazing sound, thanks to exhaust tuning that gives a soft note at lower revs and a louder sportier noise at higher revs, but if you are someone who would rather go for looks over performance you can expect smaller petrol and diesel engines on offer. The Focus Coupe Concept will make its debuts at the Detroit motor show in January but the production model isn’t likely to arrive until sometime in 2012.
